Just a quick question today, but I need to preface it with some background…
When I speak at conferences, chambers of commerce and other events, I often explain that today most people start their search for almost everything online – a restaurant, a plumber, a church, a school, how to overcome a problem they’re dealing with.
I look around the room and see lots of heads nodding.
I continue… Because most of us search for what we want and need online, it’s really important that our websites rank well in search engines so when people are searching for what we provide, they find our websites.
More heads nodding…
Depending on the event I either provide some advice on how to improve search rankings or explain that OurChurch.Com helps organizations optimize their websites so they rank well in the search results.
My observation is… just about everyone I talk to understands the importance of having good search rankings.
But there seems to be a disconnect between what people say and what people do, I’d like to better understand why that is. While almost everyone agrees good search rankings are important very few of the people I talk with are actually doing anything to get good search rankings.
So here’s the question…
While answering the poll question would be helpful, I’d love to hear more about your perspective in a comment. I’m all ears. 🙂

It is very pricey and time consuming to do yourself. Paying someone else to do it almost as bad. I am always sea hint for new ideas
Denise, thanks for your feedback. That's true – SEO can be pricey and time-consuming. Hopefully people look at the cost/time relative to its benefits. We have a client who spends $500/mo on SEO but got $300,000 of new business in 1 year from it. It's all about the ROI – return on investment.
We're working on SEO on the side; since we have a decent amount of traffic going in, we're currently prioritizing conversion optimization across our clients. Yes it is time consuming and expensive, but maybe you're just looking at the wrong tree. I have done outsourcing, and also collaborations; it's nice to get people in with crazy, great ideas for a change of pace. You learn from them, they learn from you.
Thanks John. Conversion optimization can produce a good return on investment as well.
Hi Paul 🙂 I think that paying someone else to do seo for us, that the most important is to select a realiable guy or company to do the job for us, otherwise maybe the expensive fee will be wasted, don’t you think so? 🙂
