In last week’s post, we discussed the first 4 items to check and correct to make your church website an All Star. This week, I’ll provide the last 5 items you can check (and correct) to bring your website to All Star status!
- Submenus slide-out or drop-down over other main navigation menu items. When a visitor puts their cursor over some of the main navigation menu items, do the submenus cover other main navigation items? The fix for this will depend on the website builder you are using but if you are having this problem on your site built with OurChurch.Com, contact us here.
- Content on Homepage is too long. Having too much content (text and images) on the homepage can cause the visitor to become overwhelmed and leave the site. If you have more than “4 pages” of content, either delete any unneeded content or separate the content by creating other pages and move some of the content to those pages.
- Use of animated gifs (flying birds, moving flags, rolling water, rotating crosses) The use of animated gifs (flying birds, moving flags, rolling water, rotating crosses, etc) is outdated and slows down the loading of your website. Remove these from your website.
- Pictures on website are blurry. Having blurry pictures on the website can cause visitors to focus on the quality of the pictures instead of the rest of the content of the website. Either remove the blurry images or replace blurry images with images that are not blurry.
- Pictures in content area of homepage are too big causing the website to break. If the website has pictures that are too large for the template selected, it can cause visitors to focus on the broken design instead of the rest of the content of the website. Either remove the large picture or replace large picture with a smaller version of the picture.
So, how did your website do? Is your website an All Star now? Please post your comments below. If your website doesn’t have any of these issues and is an All Star, please include a link to your All Star site!

Mark, great post! This is so true..
It is essential to have sub menu drop downs, clear images, and a good amount of content on your page. In today's society it is important because one of the main ways of advertising is through the inter web. In order to draw people into your church it is important to make the website a reflection of the essential brand elements that you're wanting to convey to the people on the other side of the computer. Your website needs to be clear representation of who you are and what you believe. We have tried to do this at https://jamesriver.org/ and I think we are on the right track!
Makena, thanks for your comment! I checked out your website and agree that you have a great presentation. Keep up the good work!
