Our website is awful! How do I convince my boss or board we need a new site?

video-24

Does your organization have an awful website, but you’re not the decision-maker?  Finding it difficult to convince your boss or board that your church, school, ministry or business needs a new website?  In this video I talk about that and provide 5 tips for helping decision-makers see the need for a new website.

You can read the transcript at: Our website is awful! How do I convince the decision-makers we need a new site?

1) Get multiple people to voice this opinion.

If you have a lot of people from all different parts of the organization that are making this suggestion that we need a new website, then, typically, it’s going to be something that’s brought to their attention more.

2) Explain that a website is a form of marketing.

If you’re a church, if you’re a school, a business or a ministry, you’re trying to get more people involved or be a part of your organization. Most of the time, this means that it will bring in more money to the organization. Even though, the primary goal of your church or ministry isn’t to bring in more money, money is the most common reason organizations give for not getting a better website. If you show a new website will bring in more money than is spent on it, it’s a good investment.

3) Make it simple.

Make things as simple as possible for your boss or board.  Don’t dump pages of numbers and options on them.   Do the research, whittle it down to a few options, present the just those options.

4) Get them involved and create ownership.

Now this may seem contrary to the last bullet point in making it simple. However, there needs to be a balance between keeping things simple and having the decision makers get skin in the game. If they’re more involved in the process, they’ll be less likely to shoot down the idea of a website and more likely to embrace it.

5) Have a plan with a final decision deadline.

Without a deadline things usually don’t get done.

Have you found yourself in a situation where the organization desperately needed a new website, but your boss or board didn’t see it?   What did you do about it?   Do you have any additional suggestions?
