Fear of Letting Go
Many communicators are deathly afraid if they delegate some communications tasks and responsibilities to others they could mess them up.
- What if they don’t get the formatting right?
- What if they post something we don’t agree with theologically?
- What if they offend someone?
- What if they don’t do it as well as I would have?
Be the Body of Christ
Communications should not be controlled by one person any more than a local church should be controlled by one person. We all have different gifts and abilities. We all have different perspectives. We’re all connected with different people. And none of us is perfect.
Your people will benefit from hearing from different voices. That doesn’t mean you let anybody communicate anything they want any time they want – you still need communications standards and guidelines, but just as the body is made up of many parts so should your communications team.
Plus sharing responsibility will save you time while empower others to serve and develop their communications gifts.
Here are 5 ways you can do this:
1) Form a web team of people with different skills – a graphic design person, someone who will keep the calendar up to date, someone who will edit and add video to your site, etc. (See 4 Innovative Ways to Build a Communications Team When You Have No Staff)
2) If you have a blog, invite church members, parents, volunteers, or clients to guest post.
3) Create a social media street team
4) Mentor someone who can fill in for you when you’re on vacation or replace you if you move on.
5) Connect with the people you communicate with in social media. Some of them probably blog, serve others, take great pictures, or share other things that you could share with others.
