For a long time people have been speculating on whether Facebook will create a search engine to rival Google and Bing. As the world’s largest social network, they have a wealth of personal information about people, information about who they know, what they like, what they believe, etc. This is the type of information Google has been pursuing for what 3…4 failed social networks? (Well, I guess Google+ isn’t really a failure…yet).

Up until now, Facebook has always denied that they would create a search engine. They were just going to do social networking. But that appears to be changing. In a recent interview, Mark Zuckerberg (creator and CEO of Facebook), said,
“Facebook is pretty uniquely positioned to answer the questions people have. At some point we’ll do it. We have a team working on it.”
Can They Do It?
It seems Google’s worst nightmare is fast approaching. Then again, there’s a lot that goes into creating a successful search engine as dozens of failed search companies can attest. The question is whether Facebook can do it right.

What do you think?
- Will Facebook be able to unseat Google as the top search provider?
- Should Facebook even be meddling in the search business?

I think that they do have a lot of information, but they also have a lot of misinformation.
There are really two types of information they will be dealing with. The first is non-personal information. This is what search engines deal with now. These are things like, information about the first flight or what a political party's platform is. My guess is that they will be using outside sources for this information, like company sites, news sites, really any website. The second type of information is personal information. This includes things like your history, gender, age, etc. as well as your likes and dislikes. This is where having the Facebook database will come in handy.
So, when you say Facebook has a lot of disinformation, I'm sure your right in terms of the non-personal there's a lot of misinformation, but do you think there is a lot of misinformation in the personal information?
Mark said, "“Facebook is pretty uniquely positioned to answer the questions people have. At some point we’ll do it. We have a team working on it,”
So the question is just when will we see it?
I believe that we will probably see a "want" button, so companies can see how to position their marketing message.
Oh how right you are. Just a little over a week ago Facebook announced that they are testing a want button: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2410724,00.a…
Thanks very much for the article, from which I can pick up a few tips
Think it will take a lot more than what Facebook has to out do Google. But will be interesting to watch. Thanks
