Each week during Web Design Month, we’re going to feature in a “Web Design Spotlight” blog post an organization that is doing a great job with the design of their website. Today, we’re featuring Heritage United Methodist Church.
Located in Clearwater, FL, Heritage United Methodist Church is a multi-generational community of believers in the United Methodist tradition growing together under the leadership of Jesus Christ. The custom Pro Website package that they have with OurChurch.Com has enabled them to serve their members and community by posting their sermons on their website, connecting people with areas to serve within the church, and serving their community through Kairos Prison Ministry and other community needs. They also have had OCC create a separate design for the part of their website dedicated to their Lighthouse Student Ministry. This gives their youth a section of the website with a different look that they better identify with and one that they can call their own.
Take a look at this video in which the Heritage UMC staff share their thoughts on their website.

This is an anaesthetically pleasing website but suffers under low bandwidth conditions. Where I am at in South Africa, the bandwidth is about 1/4 of that in Europe and probably USA. To design a website that does not take note of that is not a good idea. The rolling photos on the Home page takes minutes to download, resulting in the picture rolling before I even could read it.
A website, especially one for a church, should be quick, snappy and adjusted for all kinds of environments.
Francois, it is important to keep page load times in mind when designing a site, however, keep in mind this is a local church in Clearwater, FL, USA. They are not trying to reach South Africans but Floridians who for the most part have high-speed broadband Internet connections.
Francois, thanks for your comment. Keep in mind that this church is based in Clearwater, FL and that is their target audience. Most of the folks in this area have broadband, so this is not a problem. You raise a good point, though, that one should consider the Internet connection speed of one's audience when designing a site.
