Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. ~Proverbs 22:6
Technology, for better or worse, touches the lives of our children, even before they are born. With the amazing 3D ultrasounds, parents can see their baby’s face before it takes its first breathe. Ever see a kid without something shiny in their hands? I can’t tell you the last time I saw a kid without a hand-held game, phone or iPod absorbing their attention and time. Ever wonder what they are looking at or listening to? Or better yet, how did they know what to do with it? Who taught them how to use technology? I wonder about those things with two Gen Ys living under my roof. Watching how they have evolved from one technology to another, and how quickly and easily they share things with one another has been a real awakening.
For a long time now, God has laid it on my heart to use technology as a personal mission field. Our church has a web site, Twitter and Facebook. This week with vacation Bible school, we have even branched out into YouTube videos. It is all good stuff, but right now it’s a small group of adults pushing information out to our community. Now with God’s leading, I see another path that is important to open and develop. Technology, and social media in particular, is the device that our children use to communicate. It is how they deliver and receive their message. They understand the power of an image and words on a screen and how things go viral in an instant.
And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. ~Colossians 4:3
Here’s my goal. We all need to speak the same language so that the message is clear, and we shouldn’t be afraid of a new language. If we learn their language, then we will continue to have a dialogue, a discussion. Not one-way communication. I want to help our kids drive the content and share their faith online as an expression of their love and commitment to Jesus. It will keep us connected. It should be an important part of our fellowship.
- How has your church included technology in children and youth ministries at your church?
- Do your children and youth create their own content for your church websites?
