Kevin, certainly advertising can be a money-hole, but I don't think it has to be. Some advertising is always necessary or no one would ever know your band or songs exist. So, if you accept that some form of advertising is necessary, then it just becomes what form(s) of advertising work for you and how much should you do.

Advertising should always be an investment. You spend some money, but the return on that investment should be greater than what you paid in. If it is, then you aren't loosing the money you are spending on advertising. In fact, you would actually have less if you don't advertise. If you aren't getting a higher return on your advertising investment than you are paying in, then you need to reexamine that advertising and possibly eliminate it.

Great article!
But i think advertising is a money-eating monster.
Its like throwing money in a well, even if u throw 100 thousand dollars, it will still ask for more.
So no need to put in more here.........

Check out http://www.disrupt.fm - you sign in with your facebook page and when you upload a song it sends out a status update to all of your fans that have Liked your facebook page. It embeds a mp3 player into the wall post so that people can listen to your music right inside facebook.

Also, when someone downloads your song from Disrupt.fm, it will share the song with all of their facebook friends. The more people that download your songs, the more times it gets shared on facebook. You can check out more at http://www.disrupt.fm/artist_benefits.php
